And I hope to be liberating other Betfairians of their hard earned today. The Premier League takes more of a European slant today . Liverpool, Chelsea, Brighton, Bournemouth, Sunderland, Brentford all have the temptation of European football with 3 points.
It’s a busy day in French Ligue 2 whose season will be decided. The key to successfully trading final days of the season is to ensure
- you only focus on teams with need.
- you are flexible enough to react to league position changes as goals come in. Some teams can reach, say, their play off place only for a goal scored elsewhere to knock them out of the play off places.
- use ‘time pressure’. Time pressure is the key to ensuring low liability, big reward plays, and can nab us season defining late goals. I look in particular for any matches where a team has a single goal lead, and their opponent will benefit from a draw, and also for matches which are draws late on, with both teams benefitting hugely from 3 points!
Use www.soccer24.com at this stage of the season, in particular the Live Standings. As goals come in, we’ll see the goals impact not just on the team scoring but on all others throughout the league.
Below is a look at final day in France. Our job is to list the ‘teams with need’.
Now, why don’t you list the teams with need, and see if it mirrors my list.
- Le Mans. Must stave off St Etienne and Red Star who can capture their automatic promotion spot.
- St Etienne and Red Star. The carrot of automatic promotion is clear, instead of the heartache of the play offs.
- Rodez are not yet safe in the final play off place with
- Reims and Annecy able to capture them, the latter with a win could replace Rodez
- Bastia and Laval will be fighting it out for the relegation play off place. One of these teams will be relegated, the other will have a chance of a 2 legged play off.
Only matches involving these teams are to be looked at.

Angles: Tough to evaluate Man Utd now the goal is achieved. Will we see squad rotation? Sunderland still have a real European goal but it is so competitive that any dropped points could be catastrophic with matches running out.
